1st Sawston Boys' and Girls' Brigade

The Girls' Brigade and the Boys' Brigade are uniformed youth organisations which operate nationally and around the world. A local group is called a Company.

The 1st Sawston companies have been established in Sawston for many years, and are associated with Sawston Free Church. There are different age groups for girls and  boys, from primary school age to sixth forms with a varied programme according to the age and needs of each group.

Regular activities are crafts and cooking, games and gym, drama and singing, and one-off activities have included first aid, skin care, self-defence and bicycle maintenance.
In the summer term we like to get outside as much as possible, or even off site - particularly with the older groups, who enjoy outings such as punting, the cinema and Sawston Bowls Club.

We also spend time learning about Christianity and about how to deal with life and its challenges. Our Chaplain is Bruce Waldron, the minister of Sawston Free Church, and he is often around to share with us.

We are proud to have a marching band that parades through the village for Remembrance Sunday, Brigades’ Parade Services and at the request of local organisation

One of the highlights of the year is our annual weekend camp in July. At camp we are able to spend unrushed time together, gaining new skills and experiences (which usually involve lots of water or heights!) and learning more about the people around us.

Through all this our aim is to have good fun together whilst inspiring and encouraging the young people in our care to grow and develop in a safe and friendly environment. To this end, leaders and helpers are DBS checked and there is a child protection policy in place.
